Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ask questions or have a consultation before I’m pregnant?

Absolutely. You can schedule a free consultation to learn more about our services, home birth and midwifery care at any time.

Who do you serve?

Healthy, low risk people within a 45 minute radius of our office who desire to give birth at home.

Can I switch to your care in the middle of my pregnancy?

Yes! If you are not happy with your current birth plan and desire to make a change, you can switch into our care at any point—as long as we have the availability.

Are your services covered by insurance?

No, our services are not directly covered by insurance, but we do have flexible payment plans available. After the birth of your baby, we can provide you with a Superbill, which will allow you to seek reimbursement from your insurance company. We also provide billing services thru a third-party biller who can help you find out what may be covered and assist you with billing your insurance company.

When do I start care or have my first appointment?

You will receive a link to your Client Care portal as soon as you choose to begin working with us. This link will give you access to information and direct messaging with your midwives. If you desire an early ultrasound for dating, we recommend a first visit around 8-10 weeks of gestation. Otherwise, we will see you in the office at 11 or 12 weeks. At the first appointment, we will go over your personal and family health history.

What about testing and ultrasounds?

We can order laboratory testing and ultrasounds. You will have access to all standard, medically recommended testing through our office. If you have coverage, these tests can be billed to your insurance. If you aren’t covered, these can be billed at a discounted, out-of-pocket rate. Included in our fee are an in-office, early dating scan and ultrasound for baby’s position.

Do you provide newborn screening??

We provide state-approved Newborn Screening, exactly as provided in the hospital. There are three parts of Newborn Screening: metabolic screening for blood spot testing, pulse oximetry screening for hidden heart defects, and a hearing screening. We provide each of these at your first two at-home postpartum visits. There is no additional cost for heart and hearing screenings. The metabolic screening is based on your income and paid to the State of Michigan.

What about the birth certificate and social security card??

We file both the birth certificate and social security number for you. The social security card will be automatically mailed to you. You can purchase your copy of the birth certificate through your county clerk’s office.

When do I take my baby to the pediatrician??

We will provide well baby care for the first six weeks, postpartum. It is up to you to schedule your baby’s first appointment with a pediatrician. When you do make an appointment, let us know and we will send on the records of your baby’s care and newborn screening results.

Why does wmm work as a team?

Sustainability! Our mission is to provide the highest level of midwifery care to women who desire a home birth. We aim to practice in a way that supports a healthy lifestyle and makes midwifery care, along with becoming and practicing as a midwife, sustainable and attainable for more people. We do this by working together as a team, sharing time on call. This ensures that the attendants at your birth are well rested and best-equipped to respond to your needs. We believe that more midwives are needed and in demand in our area. We want to practice in a way that creates more midwives by training students and involving them in the process. We desire to bring balance to the midwifery practice for midwives and families.
